10 Ways to Invest in Your Community: Building Stronger Neighborhoods Together - Part 1

Investing in your community is not just about financial contributions; it's about actively participating, connecting with neighbors, and fostering a sense of belonging. When we invest in our communities, we contribute to their growth, resilience, and overall well-being. From simple activities that build connections to larger projects that enhance the physical environment, let's discover how each of us can make a difference right where we live.

In this blog post, we will explore 10 practical and meaningful ways to invest in your community - all of which I currently do. So these are tried and true. I will share more in another blog post so stay tuned!

Number 1: Take a Walk Through the Neighborhood

Exploring your community on foot offers a unique opportunity to connect with the essence of your neighborhood on a deeper level. Regular walks not only promote physical health but also provide a chance to appreciate the intricate details of local architecture, revealing the rich history and stories embedded in each building.

As you stroll through the streets, you'll notice the distinctive charm and character that sets your neighborhood apart, from quaint cafes and vibrant street art to hidden green spaces and historical landmarks.

Number 2: Attend Community Meetings

As passionate advocates for the well-being of our community, we take pride in being actively engaged in matters concerning health, safety, and the overall image of our neighborhood. Recognizing the importance of citizen involvement in local decision-making, we encourage fellow residents to seize the opportunity to attend community meetings. By participating in these gatherings, one can openly discuss relevant topics, share unique perspectives, and actively contribute to shaping a more prosperous future for the community as a whole.

The value of community involvement is a sentiment deeply ingrained in us. Not only do we actively participate in local affairs, but we also take on the responsibility of imparting knowledge and fostering civic participation through our involvement with the Urban Land Institute. By facilitating workshops and teaching urban planning principles, we aim to cultivate an informed and engaged citizenry, empowering individuals to take an active role in the betterment of their surroundings. Through education and advocacy, we hope to inspire a collective effort that will lead to a vibrant, thriving, and united neighborhood.

UrbanPlan harnesses the power of experiential learning to drive students to more deeply engage in the complex nature of land-use decisions and inspire them to take an active role as engaged citizens to create better communities.

Number 3: Get to Know Your Neighbors

Introducing yourself to your neighbors not only breaks down barriers but also lays the foundation for a warm and inclusive community. By taking the initiative to initiate conversations and learn about each other's interests, hobbies, and life stories, you create an environment where everyone feels valued and respected. As you build these relationships, you'll discover shared interests and talents, paving the way for collaborative projects, events, and activities that enrich the lives of all residents.

This sense of unity creates a support network where neighbors can rely on each other for assistance, whether it's borrowing a tool, watching over each other's homes during vacations, or offering a helping hand in times of hardship. As trust and camaraderie grow, so does the sense of belonging, making your neighborhood not just a collection of houses, but a true community where people genuinely care for one another.

Number 4: Report Infrastructure Issues.

Taking a proactive approach to identifying and reporting infrastructure issues such as potholes, broken streetlights, or damaged sidewalks plays a crucial role in maintaining a safe and functional community. By promptly notifying the relevant authorities about these concerns, you contribute to a faster response and resolution, preventing potential accidents or inconveniences for residents and visitors alike. Additionally, reporting such issues demonstrates a sense of civic responsibility and pride in one's community, encouraging others to follow suit and actively participate in the maintenance of public spaces.

Engaging in this civic duty also helps local authorities allocate their resources efficiently, ensuring that essential repairs are prioritized and completed in a timely manner. By working together to address these infrastructure problems, we can create a safer and more pleasant environment for everyone to enjoy.

Number 5: Grow a Garden or Start a Community Garden.

Starting a community garden or nurturing your backyard garden is a wonderful way to cultivate a deeper sense of environmental responsibility and community cohesion. By planting and nurturing plants, you not only add beauty to the surroundings but also actively contribute to sustainability efforts, promoting a greener and more ecologically balanced environment. Beyond the environmental benefits, gardening creates a shared space for people to come together, fostering a strong sense of community and enabling neighbors to bond over their mutual love for gardening and nature.

Through exchanging gardening tips, sharing produce, and organizing gardening events, individuals can forge lasting connections, making the community stronger and more tightly-knit. Ultimately, tending to a garden is a rewarding and transformative experience that encourages cooperation, learning, and a deeper appreciation for nature's wonders.

Number 6: Have Block Parties.

Organizing block parties or neighborhood gatherings is an excellent way to foster a sense of community and bring residents together. By creating a space for people to interact and engage, you can strengthen community bonds and cultivate a friendly neighborhood atmosphere. Sharing food, games, and conversation allows individuals to connect on a personal level, promoting a sense of belonging and camaraderie.

These events provide an opportunity for neighbors to meet, socialize, and build relationships that can extend beyond the party itself. Overall, block parties and neighborhood gatherings can play a vital role in creating a vibrant and connected community. Consider asking local organizations and businesses if they would be willing to financially support the event and ask local food trucks to vend for the event. Some are quite eager to support communities and other social events. It's good public relations for them too.

Number 7: Support Community Businesses.

Frequenting local businesses such as cafes, shops, and restaurants goes beyond just enjoying their products and services – it actively contributes to the local economy and helps sustain a vibrant community. When you choose to support these establishments, you are investing in the prosperity of your neighborhood. The revenue generated from your patronage directly supports local jobs, enabling business owners to hire and retain employees from the community. Moreover, local businesses often source their supplies from nearby suppliers, creating a ripple effect that boosts other local enterprises.

By shopping at local shops and boutiques, you not only discover unique and curated products but also encourage creativity and entrepreneurship in your community. Dining at neighborhood restaurants not only allows you to savor delicious meals but also helps maintain the distinct culinary identity of the area. By consciously directing your consumer choices towards local businesses, you become an active participant in building a strong and resilient community, where economic growth and a sense of belonging go hand in hand.

Number 8: Establish a Community Indoor Meeting Space.

My community meets in a neighborhood elementary school once a month at least 10 times per year to discuss the needs of the community and other important events related to our neighborhood.

Identifying a dedicated indoor space where community members can gather for meetings, workshops, or events is crucial for fostering engagement and collaboration. Such a space provides a central hub for community activities, allowing residents to come together and share ideas. If a suitable space is not readily available, reaching out to local organizations or institutions can help secure one. Collaborating with these entities, such as community centers, libraries, schools, or churches, may provide access to existing facilities or partnerships for shared spaces.

This partnership not only benefits the community by providing a gathering place but also strengthens relationships between different organizations and promotes a spirit of cooperation. By establishing a dedicated indoor space, the community gains a versatile venue that can be used for a wide range of activities, fostering a sense of unity and growth within the neighborhood.

Number 9: Create an Outdoor Public Space.

Our community park needed a fresh makeover, as it mostly served people from outside the community for regional baseball games, soccer matches, and such. There weren't any spaces for children to play or for community members to gather. These spaces can serve as gathering points for neighbors to connect, fostering a sense of belonging and community spirit.

Transforming underutilized areas into welcoming outdoor spaces is a fantastic way to revitalize the community and provide residents with inviting spots to relax and socialize. By setting up benches, picnic tables, and greenery, you can create a comfortable and enjoyable environment.

Additionally, incorporating greenery such as plants, flowers, and trees adds beauty and promotes a sense of tranquility in these outdoor spaces. By repurposing neglected areas into vibrant community spaces, you not only enhance the overall aesthetics of the neighborhood but also encourage outdoor activities, conversations, and a stronger sense of community pride.

Number 10: Create Public Art and/or Asphalt Art.

Transforming ordinary asphalt surfaces into vibrant artworks is a creative and engaging way to add color and life to your community. By organizing community painting events, residents can come together to unleash their creativity and contribute to the beautification of their surroundings. These events can focus on painting sidewalks, crosswalks, or park areas, providing a canvas for artistic expression. The process of painting together fosters a sense of unity and collaboration among neighbors, creating a shared sense of ownership and pride in the transformed spaces.

The colorful artworks not only enhance the visual appeal of the neighborhood but also make these areas more inviting and enjoyable for pedestrians and visitors. By transforming asphalt surfaces into vibrant artworks, you create unique and memorable spaces that reflect the artistic spirit and collective identity of your community.

The Bloomberg Philanthropies: Asphalt Art Initiative grant program is an excellent program designed to fund visual art on roadways, pedestrian spaces, and public infrastructure in cities. Typically, the projects are painted murals, organized in collaboration between city governments and local communities, with the following primary goals:

  • Improving street and pedestrian safety

  • Revitalizing and activating underutilized public space

  • Promoting collaboration and civic engagement in local communities
